Peking Opera

Presented by Autumn Melody Collective

The Autumn Melody Collective, which specializes in the presentation of Peking Opera and other Chinese performing arts in Ottawa, will present an enchanting afternoon of these unique art forms rarely seen in the capital region.

In addition to two opera repertoires with magnificent costumes, extraordinary make-up, and powerful performance by acclaimed Peking opera artist William Lau with Laura Astwood from Ottawa and invited artist Marc Lo from Toronto, the program also features the Guzheng, a traditional Chinese musical instrument by the talented Unissia Huang.

Peking opera is recognized as one of UNESCO intangible cultural heritages. It includes the complete synthesis and harmonization of singing, acting, recitation and dancing. This will be an accessible program for the whole family including a special Canadian bilingual (English and Chinese) adaptation of The Jade Bracelet, a traditional comical repertoire with contemporary references.

English and Chinese subtitles will further facilitate audience’s appreciation and understanding of the story. The short dance excerpt of A Stroll in the Garden will feature the unique combination of realism with abstract movements, creating rich theatrical meaning while the ancient musical instrument of Guzheng will transport the audience on an enchanting artistic journey.

Whether you enjoy this event in person or at home, we look forward to welcoming you.
