Open House

Presented by Shenkman Arts Centre Presents

Shenkman Arts Centre will open its doors to the community for a free event. You’ll have the chance to participate in workshops as partner organizations showcase an array of art forms, including dance, calligraphy, animation, circus, painting, pottery, theatre and martial arts. Enjoy delicious treats and refreshments from local companies while engaging with other art enthusiasts.

 

Schedule

Upper lobby:

11 am – 1 pm – K-POP dance performance and workshops by Salja Dance

  • Salja Dance is a K-pop cover dance group founded in 2013. There will be two performances; one at 11 am and the second at 12 pm. Stick around after the performances to learn some of the moves the dancers will be showcasing. The workshops are open for everybody to join in K-pop spirit and will be led by the team members themselves.

1 pm – 2 pm – Bollywood, Kathak and garba dance performance and workshops by Aroha Fine Arts

  • The cast from "ArohaFest: A Journey Across India" will showcase a delightful blend of performances and dance workshops, bringing the vibrancy and diversity of India to life! The entire family is invited to learn some new steps and discover the rich cultural tapestry of India through Bollywood, Garba, and Kathak dance!

11 am – 3 pm – Live painting demonstration by Rendezvous Art East (Arts Ottawa Office)

11 am – 3 pm – Calligraphy demonstrations and workshops by Calligraphers Society of Ottawa

11:30 am, 1 pm and 2 pm - Guided facility tour including backstage (starts next to Guest Services)

Lower lobby:

12:30 – 2:30 pm – Ottawa Circus youth group performance and leading participatory activities

  • Coaches and students will guide you through hands-on workshops where you can try aerial silks, juggling, hula hooping, flower sticks, and more. No experience is needed—just curiosity and a sense of play. All ages are welcome (children under 6 must be accompanied). Throughout the afternoon, enjoy short showcase performances from advanced teen students, giving you a glimpse of where practice and creativity can lead.

11 am – 3 pm – Intro to Animation and Movie Making by Cooper

Music Studio:

1 pm – 3 pm – Drawing and the Human Form: A life drawing workshop with the Ottawa School of Art, with live music and dancers from Tara Luz Danse

Dance Studio:

11:30 am – 1:30 pm – Workshops by Wushu

  • An exciting introduction to Wushu - a modern sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. Wushu is an art of agility, strength, and grace, that blends dynamic movements, discipline, and self-expression.
  • In this workshop, participants will explore fundamental stances, kicks, hands and arms techniques, while improving balance, flexibility, and coordination.
  • The workshop will also feature a special demonstration by the club’s best athletes – including provincial champions and national championship medalists – showcasing Wushu at its highest level!
