Maten - Utenat

Maten has been around since the late 1990s. The group is made up of Mathieu Mckenzie, Samuel Pinette and Kim Fontaine. The original Mani-Utenam group has appeared on hundreds of stages, performing live versions of songs from its two albums and EP (Akua tutu in 2001, Tshi metuatshen in 2004 and the eponymous Maten in 2016). In 2019, the group was nominated at the ADISQ gala in the “Indigenous Artist of the Year” category. Utenat, their fourth album on the Makusham Musique label, was released in the spring of 2023.

Musically, Maten has surrounded itself with talented musicians to develop a unique sound. A judicious blend of alternative folk rock with traditional Innu melodies, rhythms, instruments, vocals and chants, giving its songs an authentic texture and identity.
