Contemporary Dance

Contemporary dance workshop directed by Tara Luz Danse.

Exploration, improvisation, creation, body awareness, reflection

Contemporary Dance: Students are invited to move along with a Tara Luz Danse dancer - accompanied by a musician - to explore, through games, the concepts of improvised movement that guide the company’s creation process: the spontaneous creation of movements, the imitation and development of movements and listening to the environment and the group. At the end of the workshop, students are asked to share their experience with the group.

In this project, students will use several different techniques to create a vase. Emphasis will be on shape and form, and learning to create a harmonious object. Organic and geometric shapes found in our lives and/or in nature will serve as inspiration.

Textured Slab Mug: Creating and Presenting, Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

Students will be shown how to work with slabs. They will create a detailed, textured, functional mug that will focus on symmetry. Students will learn balance through the application of a handle.

Coil vessel with mythical creature: Creating and Presenting, Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts

Students will be shown how to work with coils to construct a vessel. They will work with slabs and apply detail to create a mythical creature (e.g., gargoyle). Value will be taught by using cross-hatching to suggest volume, shadows, variation and increased range of gradation. Students will be encouraged to express their individuality.

Log Cabin: Using coil and slab hand building techniques children create a small log cabin.

Students understand line, horizontal and vertical to create structure. A brief discussion of pioneer times. Students gain an understanding of a variety of styles, and techniques from the past and present, and their social and/or community contexts.

Creative Movement: Creating and Presenting, Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing

Creative Movement aims to teach students how to be aware of the space around their body and how to move through it. It is good for all ages and all physical abilities. It is expressing creativity with movement that might be inspired by mask, or character, costume, art, music, story or poetry. There is no right or wrong.

Printing - Printing: Lino Cut

This fun and dynamic session will explore the world of printmaking and design, and how it is found around us in our everyday life and in pop art. Students will create their own design, carve their own lino cut block and print it. Colour and contrast, investigating how the image is altered when printing on different coloured paper, or with different colours of ink will be explored.

The Balance of the Human Form: Creating and Presenting

This session is a figurative sculpture experience. Students will learn about the proportion of the human figure both static and in motion and how it finds balance. Students will learn the parts of a sculpture. They will create and learn the function of interior armature by using wire, and then use wax to sculpt the details of the figure. The students will be encouraged to think of the figure in motion ( eg. gymnast, dancer or athlete).

Colours - Colour Theory and Colour Balance

The use of colour is very important and often overlooked. In this session we will look at the importance of the pure use of colour to create art. Using coloured fabric we will create art installations, focusing on colour balance and relation. We will look at and consider the work of artists such as Jack Bush, Paul Klee, and Mark Rothko. Students will work all together, and in small groups. Teachers and assistants are encouraged to take photos of the large-scale installation before they are dismantled, creating ephemeral art based photo-documentation. Students will have the chance to create a small colour creation of their own to take home.

Visual Arts 4

Art in Nature

From Robert Smithson’s ‘Spiral Jetty’ to an Inuksuk, materials found in nature have been used to create images and symbols, both large and small. In this session students will investigate and use materials from nature to create installations that can be photographed, and as in nature, be reformed. Students will look at and discuss the diversity of patterns textures and colours found in the natural world. Teachers and assistants will be encouraged to take photos of the large-scale installation before they are dismantled, creating ephemeral art based photo-documentation. Students will have the chance to create a small colour creation of their own to take home.
