Café Classico - Silflay String Quartet with Opening Performance by Ottawa Suzuki Strings’ Stellae Boreales

Presented by: Shenkman Arts Centre Presents

Sunday, March 6, 2016 at 1 pm

Savour the sounds of classical music. This relaxed Sunday afternoon chamber concert is hosted in a cabaret-style setting in the majestic lower lobby and will include freshly baked croissants and coffee.

The Silflay String Quartet:

Leah Roseman, violin
Mark Friedman, violin
Sonya Probst, viola
Thaddeus Morden, cello

"Silflay" is a word coined by the author Richard Adams, and is used in his book Watership Down as part of the language the rabbits use. During silflay the rabbits browse above ground for tasty food; it is a time of ease and freedom. The Silflay String Quartet seeks to discover music that is outside the regular repertoire, and also to enjoy outstanding and more familiar works. As primarily orchestral players, it is wonderful to "come above ground" and play chamber music, browsing around for new tasty delights and enjoying each other's musical company and the company of the audience.

Opening performance:

Stellae Boreales is Ottawa Suzuki Strings’ premier performance violin ensemble, formed from the school’s senior students. The musicians range in age from 12 to 17, and most have been studying the violin since the age of 4 or 5. The ensemble has toured widely, with performances in Victoria B.C., China, New York City, Iceland and Washington D.C.
