Matinée Café - An afternoon of Jazz with Miguel de Armas and Cristina Sayén

Presented by: Shenkman Arts Centre

Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 2 pm

Join this versatile jazz duo as they weave strands of Latin and American jazz together in this compelling and eclectic act.

Born in Havana, Cuba, pianist and composer Miguel de Armas studied at the Conservatory Amadeo Roldan and holds a Bachelor in Cuban Percussion from the University of Arts of Cuba. Miguel brought his musical talents to Ottawa, his adopted home, and hopes to introduce Canadians to original Cuban works. His performances are nothing short of a master class in Cuban jazz rhythms.

Accompanying Miguel is singer Cristina Sayén, a Chilean-Canadian vocalist of the renowned Montreal hip-hop group Nomadic Massive. In 2005, one of Cristina’s compositions was selected to represent Canada in the Viña del Mar festival in Chile, where she was recruited to be a cast member in the televised song and dance competition Rojo Internacional, representing Canada in a variety of artistic categories. Since 2007 she has fronted the Ottawa-based band Latin Breeze, hosting shows in multiple languages and offering interactive singing and dancing at their residency at the Aylmer Marina. Cristina’s repertoire includes Latin American folk music and ballads, salsa, merengue, bachata, R&B, pop, bolero and Latin jazz.
