It takes a village to raise a child. Michel sits at his computer, putting the final touches on a play. When he finally finishes, the play’s characters appear around him. First, his mother Nana. Then, his father, his grandmother, his teacher, his friend Ginette… The action takes place on Fabre Street, in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood, during the 1950s. The audience comes face to face with the author’s memories, as he relives several delightful conversations with key people from his childhood.

A curious and tenacious child, Michel bombards adults with questions. A lover of books, movies and cut-out dolls, young Michel is obsessed by religion. He needs to understand the world around him in order to find his place. Through his incessant childhood questions and the vague answers offered by exasperated adults, Michel Tremblay subtly portrays the society in which he grew up, at the dawn of the Quiet Revolution. The play is full of charming conversations full of innocence and common sense, reminding us all of Tremblay’s talent as a writer.

Duceppe is very proud to present Michel Tremblay’s latest play, a stage adaptation of his recently published autobiographical narrative, Conversations avec un enfant curieux (Leméac 2016). Enfant insignifiant! also provides a welcome opportunity to see Guylaine Tremblay in the role of Nana and Henri Chassé in the role of the author. They both gave dazzling performances in the recent production of Encore une fois, si vous permettez.
